ACCRA, (CAJ News) – AT least 34 people have been killed in a land conflict in Ghana.

The violence erupted late August in Gbenyiri village in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district of the Savannah region.

The area is prone to such disputes.

The violence soon spread to neighboring villages, resulting in multiple shootings and fatalities.

The Ghana Red Cross reported the deaths of over 30 people.

Reports estimate that up to 50 000 people may have been displaced.

By the end of August, more than 8 700 individuals had reportedly crossed into the neighbouring Ivory Coast in the west.

Most have settled in villages within the Bounkani region, near the Ghanaian border. Some villages have received between 1 000–1 500 new arrivals, significantly staining local resources.

“Hundreds more are reportedly waiting to cross into Ivory Coast at Dinie,” said a humanitarian spokesperson.
