MAPUTO, (CAJ News) – CHINA and Mozambique are celebrating the 50th anniversary of their establishment of diplomatic relations.

Celebrations have been held at the University of Chissano in Maputo under the theme, “Achievements, Challenges and Prospects.”

“These are 50 years of continuously consolidated political mutual trust between the two countries,” Zheng Xuan, Chinese ambassador to Mozambique, said.

The envoy said since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries had consistently upheld mutual respect, equality and win-win cooperation.

In 2016, the bilateral relationship was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Xuan said in recent years, under the strategic guidance of the two heads of state, exchanges and cooperation between the two countries, the two parties and the legislative bodies have continued to deepen.

“China supports Mozambique in pursuing a development path that suits its national conditions and in safeguarding national peace and security,” the envoy said.

He noted Mozambique adhered to the one-China principle and firmly supported China in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“It also supports China’s vision of a community with a shared future for mankind and its global development, security, and civilization initiatives.”

China is now Mozambique’s second-largest trading partner, source of imports and export destination.

Bilateral trade reached US$5,18 billion in 2024.

“China and Mozambique are true friends and brothers,” Xuan said.

He added historically, the two countries supported each other and fought against colonialism and imperialism, ultimately achieving national independence and liberation.

“Consequently, they have a deeper understanding of the value of national unity and territorial integrity.”
