TIANJIN, (CAJ News) – CHINESE President Xi Jinping has called on the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to intensify efforts against “hegemonism and power politics,” stressing the need for a fairer and multipolar international order.
Speaking at the SCO leaders’ summit in Tianjin, Xi said the bloc should embody the “Shanghai Spirit” — built on mutual trust, equality, respect for diverse civilizations, and pursuit of shared development.
He praised the organization’s achievements since its founding in 2001 and urged members to reject the “Cold War mentality, bloc confrontation, and bullying practices,” terms frequently used by Beijing to criticize the United States and its Western allies.
“We should advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world, foster inclusive globalization, and make global governance more just and equitable,” Xi told delegates.
The Chinese leader emphasized cooperation that respects national differences, promotes people-to-people exchanges, and improves policymaking.
He noted the SCO’s collective economic output now exceeds \$30 trillion, underscoring its growing global influence.
China’s trade with SCO members has surpassed \$2.3 trillion, Xi revealed, highlighting the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in advancing connectivity and development.
He pledged more investment in education and the training of scientific and engineering talent to sustain growth.
More than 20 nations from Asia, Europe, and the Middle East are attending the summit, alongside representatives of the United Nations, Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and other global institutions, reflecting the SCO’s expanding reach.
