JOHANNESBURG – THE South African senior men’s cricket side has entered the new year with the hope of finishing as the highest ranked side in Test cricket.

The Proteas, as the dominant side is otherwise known, were scheduled to take to the field in the third Sunfoil Test match against the West Indies starting at Newlands, Cape Town on Friday.

A win would culminate in a successful season for the Hashim Amla-captained side with series wins in Sri Lanka and neighbouring Zimbabwe already secured.

“The boys are looking forward to this one,” Vernon Philander, the popular all-rounder told Cricket South Africa’s official website ahead of the match.

“It’s obviously a place (Newlands) where we like to play and the boys are all geared up. The guys are always motivated when we come to Cape Town,” he said.

“It’s a great venue, the boys love playing here. It’s getting another opportunity in the new year.”

A series win will ensure the Proteas finish Number One on the
International Cricket Council’s Test rankings at the end of season cut-off date, as the focus shifts to the limited overs version of the game from next week.
