LAGOS, (CAJ News) – CALLS are intensifying for the boycott of South African companies in Nigeria following the recurrence of xenophobic attacks in the Southern African country.
A human rights advocate led the latest calls amid the Nigerian government evacuating hundreds of its citizens from the volatile South Africa.
Emmanuel Onwubiko, the head of the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, singled out Multichoice, the entertainment firm, as companies Nigerians must shun.
“The most profitable measure to be adopted is for more Nigerians to boycott the services of such South African owned businesses like Multichoice,” he stated.
The influential human rights expert called on Nigerians to rather support Nigerian entertainment providers.
Onwubiko pointed out in the wake of the deadly and violent xenophobic attacks by black South Africans against other non-South African blacks, there were conversations across board on what measures the government and citizens should adopt to encourage more Nigerians to invest and stay in Nigeria.
“There have been talks of possible boycott of such South African owned and operated businesses such as MTN, Multichoice, Shoprite amongst others.”
It is believed 600 Nigerians have been evacuated from South Africa in recent weeks.
South African companies operating in Nigeria have also fallen victim to retaliatory attacks.
South African companies operating in Nigeria include MTN, Shoprite, Eskom Nigeria, South African Airways (SAA), South African Breweries (SAB), Stanbic Bank, PEP, Protea Hotels, Umgeni Water, among others.
