Trump government sanctions Libya warlord
from AHMED ZAYED in Tripoli, Libya
TRIPOLI, (CAJ News) – THE United States (US) has imposed financial sanctions against Salah Badi, one of the chief culprits of the instability besetting Libya.
Consequently, all of Badi’s assets within US jurisdiction are blocked and Americans are generally prohibited from engaging in transactions with him.
In addition, the corresponding United Nations (UN) sanctions require all UN member states to impose an asset freeze and travel ban.
The government of President Donald Trump has imposed the measures in coordination with the UN Security Council’s Libya Sanctions Committee.
The Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated Badi following an executive order.
“The US and the international community will take concrete and forceful action in response to those who undermine Libya’s peace, security or stability,” a US government spokesperson said.
Since the outbreak of a civil war in 2014, Badi has played a critical role in undermining Libyan peace, security, and stability.
In addition, forces under Badi’s command have used rockets in highly populated areas, causing indiscriminate destruction and casualties, including emergency responders and ambulance workers.
In August this year, he ordered action against rival militias aligned with the Government of National Accord, worsening instability in the capital city, Tripoli.
