LILONGWE, (CAJ News) – A TEENAGE boy (aged 15) has died and some 15 other people injured following storms in southern Malawi.

More than 1 350 households were affected after the harsh weather characterised by strong winds and heavy rain in some parts of the Chikwawa and Phalombe districts.

The weather left a trail of damage to infrastructure, particularly electric polls.

Local authorities have appealed to humanitarian partners and well-wishers to assist with financial resources for the finalisation of assessments to establish the extent of damage caused by the storms.

They called for the provision of immediate relief assistance after some of the affected people sought refuge in their relations’ houses.

The Department of Disaster Management Affairs said it was making arrangements to provide relief assistance to the affected households.

The Climate and Meteorological Services Department has forecasted the thundery rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning to persist in the Southern African country in the coming days.

Apart from recurrent flooding, the impoverished country of more than 18 million people has also suffered successive droughts in recent years.
