MAIDUGURI, (CAJ News) – PANIC has gripped the terror-prone northeast Nigeria after some soldiers randomly opened fire in resistance of their redeployment.

The riotous reaction at the Maiduguri Airport in Borno State, which is the worst affected by the Boko Haram terror, saw agitated troops firing live ammunition into the air.

Hundreds of travellers ran for their lives.

It took some two hours to calm the situation.

Soldiers were resisting redeployment to Marte, one of the towns liberated by the military from the control of Boko Haram terrorists.

Army leaders denounced the action by the soldiers, whom they described as unscrupulous.

Colonel Onyema Nwachukwu, Operation Lafiya Dole (Peace by Force) Deputy Director of Public Relations, said, “The Theatre Command undoubtedly considers this ugly incident quite regrettable and appropriate measures are being taken to forestall a recurrence.”

Nwachukwu said calm had however been restored.

He added Major General Abba Dikko, Lafiya Dole commander, had taken charge of the situation after addressing and reprimanding the troops.

“Members of the general public are urged to remain calm and go about their normal activities as the situation has been put under firm control,” Nwachukwu added.
