Cops, kidnappers killed in Nigeria rescue operation

ABUJA, (CAJ News) – SIX bandits and kidnappers as well as four policemen have been killed after an exchange of gunfire during the rescue of a Muslim leader in northern Nigeria.

The incident occurred in Rigasa Forest, Kaduna State, which is the epicentre of kidnap gangs in the West African country.

It is where police rescued Sheikh Ahmad Adam Algarkawy following his recent abduction. some kidnap-for-ransom suspects were arrested.

The breakthrough came at a cost with the bandits killing three inspectors and a sergeant.

Ibrahim Idris, Nigeria Inspector General of Police (IGP), mourned the death of the officers.

He has directed befitting burials for the deceased and prompt processing and payments of the life assurance benefits and other entitlements to their families.

“The Nigeria Police Force despite this unfortunate attack and killing of these policemen will not relent in ensuring that crimes and criminalities are brought to the barest in the country,” police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said.

Nigerian police have in recent weeks borne the brunt of violent crime.

Last month, armed robbers killed no less than 11 officers during separate incidents in the capital Abuja.

Africa’s most populous country of over 190 million people is experiencing a wave of violence, including a plot by the Boko Haram Islamist sect to overthrow the government.
