PRETORIA, (CAJ News) SOUTH African President Jacob Zuma has resigned on Wednesday night following the decision by the African National Congress (ANC) to recall him.

The resignation saved Zuma from a potential embarrassment from the vote of no confidence which hovered on his neck, precisely on Thursday morning.

The ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) had earlier instructed its members of parliament to support the motion of vote of no confidence by opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) if Zuma refused to step aside.

Immediately after the resignation announcement, ANC in Luthuli welcomed the move saying Zuma did well.

ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte said: “ANC wants to salute President Zuma’s contributions during his tenure.”

Earlier on Zuma said, though he was stepping down, he did not agree on the manner in which he was treated arguing he never did anything wrong to warrant his recall.

“I fear no motion of no confidence, impeachment. I have come to the decision to resign as president of the republic with immediate effect,” Zuma said.

He also said he did not want the ANC to be divided because of his actions hence his resignation.

Zuma also seized the opportunity to blame the country’s white monopoly capital of infiltrating the liberation movement.
