ABUJA, (CAJ News) – A Nigerian policeman, among four officers declared missing after an ambush by suspected herdsmen, has been found dead and his body mutilated.

The Nigeria Police Force in the central Benue State said the remains of the slain officer were found without eyes, ears and nose.

Two of the missing officers were previously found alive on Sunday, a day after the ambush at a village while they were returning from a peace-building mission in the state that is among those worst affected by farmer/herdsmen clashes.

The unnamed officer has been found in the area where the attack took place.

“He was found brutally slaughtered, with eyes and ears as well as nose removed. The search for the remaining missing police officer is still ongoing,” said Benue State Police Command spokesman, Moses Yamu.

He said the recurring bloodbath from the clashes blamed on the nomadic herdsmen would not deter the police force.

“Police remains committed to their statutory and daunting obligation of ensuring security as well as protection of life and property of all,” Yamu assured.

Scores have been killed during the conflicts pitting mainly Christian farmers and largely Muslim herders this year.

The skirmishes add to the woes of the West African country that is suffering militancy by the Boko Haram and kidnap gangs.
