JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL) has confirmed Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as its preferred candidate for the presidency of the ruling party.

The women’s league wants the former African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson to succeed President Jacob Zuma as the leader of the ex-liberation movement.

She is set to contest the position against current deputy, Cyril Ramaphosa, at the 54th national conference of the ANC starting in Johannesburg on Saturday.

ANCWL has drawn a line-up of preferred office bearers expected to emerge from the elective congress.

David Mabuza, Mpumalanga Provincial premier, is also the Women’s League’s preferred deputy president after the elective conference.

Others include Nathi Mthethwa as national chairperson, and Free State Premier Ace Magashule as secretary-general.

The women’s league prefers Jessie Duarte to retaining her deputy secretary-general position while International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane is nominated for the treasurer-general’s berth.

However, surveys show majority ANC party structures nationwide prefer Ramaphosa to replace Zuma.
