Wits lift Telkom Cup

Wits' Vincent Pule

Wits’ Vincent Pule

DURBAN, (CAJ News) – BIDVEST Wits are the 2017 Telkom Knock-Out champions following a narrow 1-0 victory over Bloemfontein in a tightly contested final at Prince Magogo Stadium, KwaMashu, Durban on Saturday.

The Phunya Sele Sele as Bloemfontein Celtic are affectionately called in local football circles lost concentration in injury time to allow Wits substitute Vincent Pule to rifle home with a back heel.

Pule received a neat pass from Amr Gamal in the 12 yard box before back heeling to fool the otherwise impressive Amour Patrick Tignyemb in goals for Celtic the 91st minute.

Earlier Wits, who dominated the first half of the game could have scored their opener in 16th minute when Malawian international Gabadinho Mhango twisted and turned defenders on the left side before unselfishly laying an in-swinger to the 12-yard box.

However, the inattentive Egyptian forward Gamal missed from close range with Celtic goalkeeper Tignyemb beaten systems out.

But Gamal made amendments when he roasted his markers of the right side before curling for Pule to score with a back-heel.

Mhango was voted the man-of-the-match player while Wits walked away with a R4 million cheque for winning the cup final.
