October a watershed moment for history chasing Baroka

JOHANNESBURG – THE month of October could prove a defining month for high-flying Baroka FC, the Limpopo side who have defied all odds and maintained a brilliant start to the 2017/18 season.
The team is one game away from winning the Q 1 innovation, given to the side that finishes top after a particular quarter of the season.
Bakgakga ba Mpahlele top the 16-team log with 15 points from seven games.
They are two ahead of Golden Arrows, the team they meet in the decisive encounter at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on October 18.
A win will put them in a good position with champions Mamelodi Sundwons and Cape Town City the only sides still with a chance.
Nonetheless, Baroka spokesperson, Jimmy Ngobeni, insists their sights are still set on the Premiership title despite their chances of winning the Q1 brightened by their 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in Durban last weekend.
“We are aware the Q 1 innovation award is in our hands but we have told the boys not to lose sight of the bigger prize that is the league,” Ngobeni said.
The Q1 carries prize money of R1,5 million and if they manage to clinch it, Baroka will emulate neighbours Polokwane City, who won the Q2 in 2014 under Kosta Papic.
Meanwhile, enterprising goalkeeper, Oscarine Masuluke is in contention for the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) Puskas Award, which honours a player adjudged to have scored the most aesthetically significant or most beautiful goal of the year.
The goal he scored against Orlando Pirates – an equaliser from a scissors kick with the last kick of the match- has caught global attention.
He is nominated alongside nine other players.
Voting has opened and as far as sentiment is concerned, Masuluke could emerge with the accolade at the Best FIFA Football Awards 2017 to be held on October 23 in London, England.
“We therefore request the football fans and the entire country to vote for the goal,” Ngobeni pleaded.
