JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – FANS have been urged to vote for goal scored by South African local goalkeeper, Oscarine Masuluke, which is nominated for the best goal in the world for 2016/17.
The fairy-tale goal by the Baroka FC goalminder is nominated alongside nine other goals for the Federation of International Football Awards (FIFA) Puskas Award.
The award recognises the player judged to have scored the “most aesthetically significant” or “most beautiful” goal of the year.
A panel of goalscoring experts have whittled down the thousands of goals from around the world between October 1, 2016 to July, 2 2017.
Masuluke’s goal came in a league match against Orlando Pirates in November.
He scored a stunning bicycle kick with virtually the last kick of the game to earn his side a one-all draw.
In a statement on Friday, Baroka FC lauded the player for putting the team and South African football on the global map.
“The award in itself is an indication that South Africa can compete against the best in the world,” Baroka stated.
“We therefore request the football fans and the entire country to vote the goal,” Baroka FC stated.
Fans can vote online on the FIFA website.
First round voting ends October 9 when the candidates will be trimmed down to three final nominees.
All voting for the Puskás Award will close during the ceremony on October .
