HARARE, (CAJ News) – GROWING discontentment by Zimbabweans and several voices within Zanu PF to have a new leader has prompted First Lady Grace Mugabe to urge her husband to name his successor.

Mugabe, 93, has been endorsed as Zanu PF’s candidate for next year’s harmonised elections at a time the country was bleeding economically while his ruling party Zanu PF had developed fissures owing to worsening factionalism.

For years, Zanu PF leaders were afraid of coming in the open to tell Mugabe to “leave”, but on Thursday, his wife, Grace, took the guts to tell Mugabe to announce his successor.

Grace said Mugabe should be actively involved in the process of identifying his successor while the final endorsement of the successor lies with the president.

“I am asking him now in front of you (Mugabe)! You, president, don’t be afraid. Tell us your choice, which horse should we back. Because we respect him, his word will be final,” Grace said.

Mugabe, in power since the country attained independence from Britain in 1980, has been always the sole Zanu PF and Head of state.

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is widely tipped by many to succeed president Mugabe.
