KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – SUSPECTED Christian radicals have killed a United Nations peacekeeper and injured three others in the volatile Central African Republic (CAR).
The peacekeeper and his colleagues from Morocco, who are members of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the CAR, suffered the attack in Bangassou, southeast of the lawless country.
UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, denounced the killing and the overall anarchy afflicting the Central African country.
He offered his condolences to the bereaved family and to the government of Morocco.
Guterres said the UN was appalled by attacks against its peacekeepers and urged the CAR authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
He also expressed deep concern about the continued fighting in the ungovernable regions of the troubled country.
The Christian anti-Balaka elements and Muslim Seleka forces are involved in severe banditry.
Fighting has continued since a coup in 2012 deposed President Francois Boazize from power.
President Faustin-Archange Touadéra’s government, elected in 2016, is helpless amid the deepening crisis.
