Somali scribe jailed for exposing president’s graft

MOGADISHU, (CAJ News) – AUTHORITIES northeast of Somalia have been urged to release a journalist who is detained among terrorists for unearthing alleged corruption by the regional president.Ahmed Ali Kilwe, founder of a popular news website investigating graft by government, is detained among Al-Shabaab terror members for his expose on President Abdiweli Ali of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland.According to reports by Kilwe’s, the leader allegedly abused public funds for personal enrichment.On the orders of the president, Kilwe has been detained at the notorious Puntland Central Prison for “posting articles impertinent to the Puntland president.”The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) expressed outrage.
“Ahmed Ali Kilwe’s detention without charge sends a terrifying message to journalists in Puntland,” said CPJ’s Africa hed, Angela Quintal.“Authorities should release Ahmed without further delay, and should allow him and all journalists to work without fear of reprisal.”Kilwe has initially been held at a prison at a police checkpoint near Garowe.
Security forces also use the facility to jail suspected members of the Al-Shabaab armed group.At least 62 journalists have been killed in the East African country since the onset of the political crisis in 1992.
