COSAFA final: Copper Bullets wary of Warriors firepower

RUSTENBURG, (CAJ News) – ZAMBIA are wary of the form of joint-record winners of the Council of African Football Association (COSAFA) Castle Cup, Zimbabwe, ahead of the two rivals’ clash in the final northwest of South Africa on Sunday.
Zambia’s Chipolopolo (Copper Bullets) will battle against the free-scoring Warriors at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rusteburg.
Kickoff in this Zambezi derby is 15h00, concluding the regional tournament.
With the winner assured of a record-breaking fifth title, fireworks are expected at the 2010 World Cup venue.
Zambia forward, Justin Shonga, is aware of Zimbabwe’s juggernaut that is ever unstoppable when captain Ovidy Karuru is on song.
“Against Tanzania we didn’t have much possession. We just wanted to find the back of the net,” he said of the semifinal match the side won 4-2 against Tanzania.
Shonga said ahead of the Zimbabwe duel, “We just have to work on ball possession. We shouldn’t give away the ball too much so that we can out play our opponents.”
It would be folly for the Zambians give away possession and allow Karuru room.
Coach Sunday Chidzambwa’s lads are trigger-happy with ten goals in the three group matches and another six in the knockouts.
South African-based Karuru, topscorer with six goals, and Knox Mtizwa, the hat-trick hero against Lesotho in the semifinals, have been lethal combatants for the Warriors, much to the excitement of Chidzambwa.
“Since we are scoring goals it makes players have that urge to want to play more, and when you score the game becomes much easier for you and psychological the fatigue is not felt that much,” Chidzambwa said.
Zambia coach, Wedson Nyirenda, is hoping for second time lucky with his squad that, besides Shonga, boasts forwards Brian Mwila and Jackson Chirwa.
“For me, I was here with the Under-20 team that won the COSAFA early this year, so am very happy,” Nyirenda said.
