ORKNEY, (CAJ News) – ABSA premiership defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns narrowly beat stubborn Free State Stars 1-0 in an exciting league match played at James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney on Sunday.

First half strike by defender Motjeka Madisha in the 45th minute ensured the Brazilians kept pressure on log pacesetters Cape Town City.

The goal, courtesy of a well taken corner kick by Khama Billiat was connected first time by Madisha to beat Thela Ngobeni hands down in goals for Ea Lla Koto.

Sundowns, who are slowly finding their winning pattern dictated pace in the first half with Billiat, Percy Tau and Hlompho Kekan firing from angles, but found Ngobeni unyielding between the goalposts.

Earlier during midweek, Sundowns had massacred city rivals SuperSport United 5-0 in a Tshwane derby to collect the crucial three points.

The victory on Sunday gave relief to Pitso Mosimane’s chances of returning their title as they now lie fourth on the log with 41 points from 20 games played to date.

Log leaders Cape Town City are leading the 16-team log standing with 45 points from 23 outings.

Sundowns boast three games in hand, and if they continue with their winning form, then the Brazilians can always return their title.
