Youths rape in the name of Burundi leaders

From OMEGA SSUUNA in Bujumbura, Burundi
BUJUMBURA, (CAJ News) – YOUTH militia loyal to Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has openly threatened rape on critics opposed to the leader’s controversial rule.
The feared Imbonerakure, as the youth brigade is known, has been captured on video at an office of Nkurunziza’s National Council for the Defense of Democracy-Forces for the Defense of Democracy north of the country, making the threats.
Amid pressure on the president to step down, about 200 of party cadres have been captured on video making the threats during marches through the centre of Ntega commune in the northern Kirundo Province.
Local authorities partisan to the ruling party have made no attempts to stop the vitriolic youths that are a law unto themselves.
Human Rights Watch regional researcher, Lane Hartill, said the Imbonerakure had struck fear into the hearts of Burundians suffering continued violations since Nkurunziza brutally secured another term as president in 2015.
More than 390 000 Burundians have fled the country and another 146 000 are internally displaced.
“Since the crisis began two years ago, some Imbonerakure members have raped the wives and daughters of opposition members, beat people to death with clubs, and tortured opponents,” said Lane Hartill of Human Rights Watch.
Nkurunziza’s party said it was investigating.
“Unfortunately, contrary to the ideals of the ruling party, certain youth sang a song that doesn’t correspond with the morals or the ideology of our party.”
