From MARIA MACHARIA in Nairobi, Kenya
NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – A KENYAN court has heard how terrorists heartlessly shot at children at a party shop during one of Kenya worst attacks by terrorists.
About 70 people were killed and 175 injured when Al-Shabaab insurgents attacked the Westgate Mall in the capital Nairobi in 2013.
Giving evidence in court, Charles Ogeto, a senior superintendent attached to the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit, said four armed men laid siege on the shop with the sole intention of killing the children, not to rob.
He said the gunmen entered the main gate of the mall and first threw two grenades at the people seated outside, before splitting into two and stationing themselves at the main entrance, while a group attacked the children.
“Two of the attackers who entered the mall through the parking area which was on the top floor, killed children mercilessly before they proceeded to the lower floors.”
The witness testified in a case in which Mohammed Abdi, Adan Dheq,Abdullah Omar and Hassan Mustafa are accused of assisting the mall attackers.
Children aged eight were among those killed in the mall attack, one of the worst acts of terrorism in Kenya since the bombing of the United States embassy in 1998.
