HARARE, (CAJ News) – AILING Zimbabwean President, Robert Mugabe, is reportedly in critical condition after sneaking out of the country earlier this week for urgent medical attention in Singapore.
He is reported from suffering from cancer while old age is also taking its toll.
The president, in power since independence from Britain in 1980, turned 93 last week.
He left Harare with his entire family using a private chartered flight.
At the Harare international airport, the place was heavily guarded with both intelligence, military and police while passengers and airport workers were not allowed around the runway at the time of his departure.
The presidential spokesman, George Charamba, could not provide detail into the leader’s ill-health but confirmed he had left the country to Asia.
His Excellency the President left this (Wednesday) morning for Singapore for a scheduled medical review,” Charamba told the state media.
He said the review was “scheduled” and Mugabe would return next week.
In the absence of Mugabe, one of his two deputies, Phelekezela Mphoko, who is former High Commissioner to South Africa, is the acting President.
Mugabe has previously denied reports of ill-health and scoffed at rumours about his death.
