MOGADISHU, (CAJ News), FIVE teenage boys have been jailed for stabbing, torturing and raping a girl (16), and beating another, raising hopes among Somalis this would deter widespread sexual violence.
The men have been sentenced to jail terms ranging from five to ten years for the rape and assault in Galdogob, Puntland State in January. She was forced into a car and violated in a secluded spot.
The rape ordeal and video went viral on social media, sparking outrage in the East African country where a majority of violations targeted at women and young girls which are never documented.
“We are not ready to see a repeat of such an incident,” Fartun Ahmed Omar, women’s rights activist said.
Available statistics show increased Gender Based Violence in Somalia emerging from conflict, forced evictions and displacements, with women being the most affected.
The violations have been aggravated by a weak rule of law and lack of fair trial.
Somalia is suffering chronic problems such as civil war that has dragged on for over two decades, terror by the Al-Shabaab group and drought.
