KAMPALA, (CAJ News) – THE recent elections to choose a successor to Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma as chairperson of the African Union Commission has ignited a diplomatic spat between East African neighbours Kenya and Uganda.
Kenya, which fielded cabinet secretary for foreign affairs, Amina Mohamed, accused Uganda of failure to support its candidate and lobby other African countries, resulting in her loss to Chad’s Moussa Mahamat.
Mohamed has conceded defeat to the former Chad prime minister has urged the government to investigate the alleged lack of support from Uganda in the polls held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia earlier this week
Kenya spent significantly lobbying for her.
Uganda’s foreign affairs ministry said Kenya’s claim was “unsubstantiated” and “false.”
“Uganda wishes to state categorically that our support to the candidature of Amina before and during elections was unequivocal.”
Relations between the two countries have been uneasy over the years.
Each has accused the other of harbouring and assisting in insurgents.
Meanwhile, it has emerged countries in the region, including Burundi, Djibouti, Tanzania and Uganda snubbed the Kenyan candidate.
Diplomatic sources attributed this to Kenya “bullying” its neighbours. Kenya is the region’s largest economy.
in defiance of pleas to halt the move, Kenya is planning to close the world’s biggest refugee site, Dabaab, which will leave millions, particularly Somalians stranded.
