LAGOS, (CAJ News) – NIGERIANS affected by oil spills blamed on the Shell Petroleum Development Company are disappointed by a court ruling dismissing their demands for compensation in English courts.
The Bille and Ogale communities in Niger Delta are affected by the spills.
They suffered a further setback when a British high court on Thursday ruled against their demands for compensation.
“We are disappointed by the news of the judgment,” said a local chief of the Bille.
“The Bille people have been pushed against the wall by Shell for too long,” he added.
King Okpabi of the Ogale said his community and he were “disappointed but not discouraged.”
He nonetheless appears sceptic of local courts dispensing justice.
“There is no hope of justice in the Nigerian courts,” he added.
His encouragement is buoyed by an appeal they have made through their UK representatives.
