NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYAN police have arrested a volunteer teacher for the alleged rape of three schoolgirls.
The suspect, named as Willy Kiprop, has been arrested in the western city of Eldoret for the alleged violation of the minors aged between 12 and 16.
It is alleged the suspect on various occasions waylaid them to maize plantations and before defiling them.
However, following a citizen’s arrest before he was handed over to police, he claimed he was romantically involved with them.
Eldoret area assistant police chief, Christine Cheboi, confirmed the man was in custody and would be arraigned in court for rape.
“Police have arrested and locked him. We have taken the minors to hospital for tests and launched investigations into this matter,” she said.
In Kenya, defiling a child under aged between 12 and 15 carries a minimum of 20 years.
A similar offence on a child aged 16 to 18 carries a minimum sentence of 15 years.
