LIBREVILLE, (CAJ News) – DEFENDING champions Ivory Coast are skating on thin ice as the race to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinal berths intensifies.
The Elephants, who won the previous tournament after a marathon penalty shootout (9-8) against Ghana in Equatorial Guinea two years ago, are precariously positioned in Group C.
Placed third, they are up against Morocco in a must-win encounter at the Stade d’Oyem to avoid an uncharacteristic early flight back home.
Second-placed Morocco are on three points, one better than the Ivoirians.
Democratic Republic of Congo, the group leaders with four points entertain tail-enders Togo at the Stade de Port Gentil.
Togo have a single point from two outings each team in the group has featured in.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, Senegal and Tunisia booked their places in the quarterfinal at the expense of Algeria and Zimbabwe in Group B.
Senegal finished top with seven points, one more than Tunisia. Algeria secured two points and Zimbabwe were placed last with a single point.
Group A winners Burkina Faso and runner-up Cameron reached the knockout stages on Sunday, booting out disgraced hosts Gabon and debutantes Guinea-Bissau.
