Mugabe’s party wins bloody poll

NYIKA, (CAJ News) – PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe’s Zanu-PF has won the Bikita West constituency but amid controversy surrounding the by-election held this past weekend.
The party, in power since 1980, is accused of beating villagers suspected to be supporting expelled deputy president, Joice Mujuru, who is now leading the Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF).
Opposition parties over alleged rigging and buying votes through food and agriculture implements.
Its candidate, Beauty Chabaya, won the Bikita West with 13 156 votes against closest rival, Kudakwashe Gopo, of ZimPF’s who polled 2 453 votes.
Independent candidate Innocent Muzvimbiri polled 725 votes while brutalised candidate of the National Constitutional Assembly (ANC) Madock Chivasa got 343 votes. Chivasa is recovering from injuries sustained during an attack by suspected Zanu-PF youth.
Movement for Democratic Change, headed by former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, saws its cansidate Heya Shoko manage a paltry 76 votes.
There were 247 spoilt ballot papers.
