LIBREVILLE, (CAJ News) – WHILE Group B at the Africa Cup of Nations has seen Senegal comfortably book a quarterfinal berth, the race for the final qualifying spot is still wide open.
Ahead of the final round of matches, Algeria, Tunisia and Zimbabwe are still in contention.
Senegal are through with a perfect record after two matches, the first side in the tournament to qualify for the knockout stages, while Tunisia have amassed three points. Zimbabwe and Algeria anchor the table with a point apiece, garnered in their thrilling opening match last Sunday.
On Thursday, Senegal were too powerful for Zimbabwe and were deserved winners after two early goals in Franceville.
The Lions of Teranga found the net through Sadio Mane (10th minute) and a sublime setpiece by Henri Saviet in the 13th minute.
Elsewhere, defensive lapses beset Algeria in a 2-1 defeat by fellow North Africans Tunisia.
Captain Aïssa Mandi, netted an own goal and Faouzi Ghoulam gave away a penalty in the 50th and 66th minute. Naim Sliti converted from the spot.
Sofiane Hanni pulled one back in stoppage time but it was too little too late.
Senegal next play Algeria in the ultimate Group B match on Monday, 23 January 2017 in Franceville whilst Tunisia battles Zimbabwe in Libreville.
