BANJUL, (CAJ News) – BELEAGUERED President, Yahya Jammeh, pillars of support in his quest to cling to power are collapsing.
After the international community and regional blocs pledged their support of the winner of the December presidential poll, Adama Barrow, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has called on him to vacate office on Thursday.
The organisation has previously been seen as a supporter of the dictator, who in declared the Muslim-majority country to be an Islamic republic.
OIC Secretary General, Dr Yousef Al-Othaimeen, urged Jammeh, his government and particularly the defense and security forces of their responsibilities to protect the people.
He urged them to exercise restraint and avoid any act capable of jeopardizing the peaceful swearing in process of the President-elect.
“They must remember the possible consequences of their actions,” said Al-Othaimeen.
The African Union has also warned of consequences if Jammeh, who initially accepted the results but later contested, failed to hand over power.
Mediation efforts by the Economic Community of West African States have failed thus far. Thousands have fled to neighbouring countries fearing an outbreak of war if either Jammeh or Barrow assume the presidency.
