Soldiers run amok at Beitbridge border

BEITBRIDGE, (CAJ News) – SOME Zimbabwean soldiers deployed at on the border with South Africa have gone on the rampage after a colleague was robbed of his AK 47 rifle during sexual intercourse.
Robbers pounced on the unidentified army officer and her sex partner in the bushes at the Beitbridge township of Dulivhadzimo.
The soldier, from 1 Independent Battalion under One Brigade is part of Zimbabwean military personnel guarding the Beitbridge border post between Zimbabwe and South Africa during the busy festive season.
Witnesses said in the wake of the robbery, soldiers wantonly assaulted civilians in a violent operation to track the robbers.
“The soldiers beat up anyone they suspected was behind the robbery,” said a man at the Dulivhadzimo bus terminus.
National police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi, said he was no aware of the incident as no reports about such a robbery or assault had been made.
Army spokesperson, Alpheus Makotore, could not be reached for comment.There is an increased presence of Zimbabwean soldiers at the Beitbridge border post, which handles huge volumes of traffic and increased number of travellers during the festive season.The busiest port of entry in sub-Saharan African, it is also a haven for robbers, smugglers and human traffickers.
