TOKYO, (CAJ News) – AFRICAN champions Mamelodi Sundowns have finished the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA) Club World Cup with the wooden spoon.
The South African side’s disappointing campaign came to an end at the hands of Asian champions, Jeonbuk Hyundai, at the Suita City Stadium in Japan.
The two teams contested the fifth/sixth playoff which finished 4-1 in favour of the Asians.
The Brazilians, as Sundowns are otherwise known, were jittery and let in three first half goals.
Bo-Kyung Kim (18 minutes), Jong-Ho Lee (29th) and Ricardo Nascimento (own goal, 41st). Shin-Wook Kim put the final nail in the Sundowns’ coffin in the 89th minute.
Percy Tau had scored a 48th minute face-saver as Downs seemed to have found their rhythm.
Sundowns lost their opening match 0-2 to Japan’s Kashima Antlers.
