MOGADISHU, (CAJ News) – THE worst terror attack in months in the capital Mogadishu indicates the Al-Shabaab terror group’s rejection of Somalia’s
otherwise peaceful election.
At least 29 people were left dead and scores injured after a car bomber struck a police complex.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing on its radio station, much to the ire of the United Nations envoy.
“The bombing may be intended to signal al-Shabaab’s rejection of the 2016 electoral process. If so, it is a bloody and deeply counterproductive way
to do so,” said UN envoy, Michael Keating.
He extended condolences to families and friends of the deceased.
The weekend attack came as most of the voting for the House of the People had been completed, with 226 of the 275 seats filled.
Others seats expected to be filled in the coming week. Last week,
Somalia’s National Leadership Forum determined that the election of the
President will take place by the end of December.
Somalia is immersed in a 25-year civil war, terrorism and drought.
