KHARTOUM, (CAJ News) –WHAT began as a political conflict has transformed into an outright ethnic war amid increasing attacks against civilians,
ethnically targeted killings, hate speech and incitement to violence in South Sudan.
The United Nations Security Council has raised such concerns following the violations carried out by Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA),
opposition as well as militias and unidentified armed groups.
The 15-member UN Security Council called for urgent steps to address the strife to promote reconciliation among the people, including through a
process of justice and accountability.
Council members called on the parties to immediately agree on implementation of an effective cessation of hostilities in order to avoid
escalation of conflict in the upcoming dry season.
“There is no military solution to the conflict.”
Council members signaled their readiness to consider taking additional measures to prevent a further escalation of violence and conflict,
including sanctions.
The East-Central African country, the world’s newest nation, has suffered instability since independence from Sudan in 2011.
