HARARE, (CAJ News) – A six-week-old child is among some victims admitted to a Harare hospital after an attack by suspected Zanu (PF) supporters, the latest in a series of violence blamed on the party of President Robert Mugabe ahead of the 2018 elections.
The opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) reported four victims were brutally attacked by some youth, including some wearing military uniform, at a rally in the capital city.
The minor attended the rally with the mother.
“The attack shows the depth of barbarism our political opponents in the ruling party are willing to sink to in order to achieve their targets,” said MDC spokesperson, Obert Gutu in Harare.
He said investigations by the opposition party had established plans by Zanu (PF) supporters to attack its members in the high density suburbs of the capital city, where the ruling party militants was reportedly establishing torture bases.
Tensions are high in Zimbabwe where Mugabe (92) is clinging to power in the face of fierce protests against the economic crisis.
Police have brutally responded to the street demonstrations with scores arrested.
However, street marches in support of the veteran leader, who plans to contest the 2018 polls, have proceeded without incidents, with police escorting the marchers.
