KINSHASA, (CAJ News) – A combination of civil unrest, arson, robberies and vandalism has claimed 19 lives amid indications of more bloodshed in the troubled Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Security forces have clashed with protesters in the capital Kinshasa demanding the resignation of Democratic Republic of Congo President, Joseph Kabila.

Among those killed are three police officers while over 100 people have been injured during skirmishes that greeted the failure by the Independent National Electoral Commission to announce the date for presidential elections.

The lack of progress was in defiance of the constitution with polls initially scheduled for November but now highly unlikely.

It had been reported some Russian citizens were among the victims of the violence in Kinshasa.

However, an Embassy spokesperson denied the reports.

The Embassy said Moscow advocated settling differences in Congolese society through political methods and dialogue.

“We will continue to closely follow developments in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.”
