ABUJA, (CAJ News) – NIGERIA President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that disciplinary action be taken against aides that exposed him to embarrassment by plagiarizing United States President Barack Obama’s 2008 victory speech.

Buhari cited parts of the speech last Thursday while inaugurating his “Change Begins With Me Campaign”, aimed to restore Nigeria’s image.

Garba Shehu, Buhari’s spokesman, said the similarities between Obama’s and Buhari’s speeches were “too close to be passed as coincidence.”

“There was a mistake by an overzealous staff and we regret that this has happened,” he apologised.

Shehu said already, a Deputy Director in the Presidency had accepted responsibility for the insertion of the contentious paragraph.

“This serious oversight will be investigated thoroughly and appropriate sanction meted.”

Shehu said the Presidency regreted the “unfortunate incident” and would ensure this did not happen again.

Obama gave his victory speech after becoming the first black President of the United States.

He gave his speech in his home city of Chicago, Illinois before an estimated crowd of 240 000.

It was viewed on television and the internet by millions around the globe.
