Rebels harass passengers, destroy hospital
From ARIMANDO DOMINGOS in Maputo, Mozambique
MAPUTO, (CAJ News) – TRAVELERS and health institutions have borne the brunt of renewed militant attacks by the opposition Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo).
The attacks are in retaliation to last week’s attack on their fellow members by government security forces in Morrumbala district in the central province of Zambezia. Renamo alleges members of The defence forces carried out the attack last week while in civilian clothes.
A minibus driver, who identified himself as Carlos da Conceicao, said he was terrified when heavily-armed men emerged from the bush and stopped his minibus before searching everyone on board.
The men numbering about 30 reportedly pointed guns at travelers.
In a separate incident, a gang of an estimated 15 Renamo gunmen attacked headquarters for Sabeta administrative in Tambara district in Manica Province. They destroyed hospital equipment including maternity ward before smashing windows, vandalising chairs, desks and cupboards.
Tambara district administrator, Mauricio Masharubu, said some medicines and medical equipment were stolen.
No injuries were reported.
A Senior government official at Maua district, Joao Maguimbe, said police had been deployed in the affected areas.
