JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE Eskom Development Foundation has rewarded black-owned small and medium enterprises from across South Africa to the tune of R1,3 million (about US$ 92 700).

The Eskom Business Investment Competition (BIC) Awards, have been held in Johannesburg where over 100 registered companies competed as finalists in categories including – manufacturing, trade and services, agriculture and agro-processing as well as construction and engineering.

Overall winner, Nomcebo Printers from Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, took the competition’s biggest prize of R150 000 to invest in the business. Nomcebo Printers is a production company which includes graphic design, printing, heat press and manufacturing of branded log and invoice books in its service portfolio.

Category winners were Metal Products (Durban, KwaZulu-Natal), The Golden Goose Catering and Cake Décor (Welkom, Free State), Lamo Solar (Randburg, Gauteng) and SMkhize & Associates (Brakpan, Gauteng).

They won in Manufacturing, Trade and Services, Construction and Engineering and Agriculture and Agro-processing respectively.

Eskom Development Foundation runs the annual Business Investment Competition (BIC) Awards, which started in 2007, aimed at recognising and rewarding small businesses that are significantly contributing to the fight against unemployment and poverty and growing the economy.

Chairman of the Board of Eskom Holdings, Dr Baldwin Ngubane, says with the economy struggling to grow, every South African has to play a part in its revival.

“Through the Eskom Development Foundation, we remain committed to playing our part in this field by acknowledging the difference that small black-owned businesses make in our economy,” says Ngubane.
