Barons blamed for Mozambique albino murders
From ARIMANDO DIMINGOS in Maputo, Mozambique
MAPUTO, (CAJ News) – MOZAMBIQUE is on the verge of xenophobic attacks amid allegations outsiders were masterminding the killing of albinos, who are hunted for their body parts believed to be lucky charms.
This is the warning of a United Nations expert, Ikponwosa Ero, who disclosed the masterminds operated in a secretive but powerful cross-border network similar to that of drug barons.
She said while there was this belief, there are insufficient facts supporting this assertion.
Care should be taken in making such inferences to avoid stoking xenophobic sentiments, particularly against the refugees and migrants that Mozambique is welcoming,” said Ero.
Albinos are under siege in the Southern African country.
Even their faeces are collected, the expert said.
She also blamed traditional healers for misleading clients albinos’ parts were lucky charms.
“Real fear therefore exists among persons with albinism across the country, particularly in provinces with reported attacks,” said Ero.
During her visit to Mozambique, Ero went to the capital Maputo, Nampula and Beira where she met families of victims, albinos and their families and detainees accused of crimes against persons with albinism.
More than 20 albinos, including a six-year-old, have been kidnapped or killed this year particularly in the north of the country, bordering Tanzania.
