LILONGWE, (CAJ News) – A soldier is among four suspects arrested for a series of robberies in the Malawi capital, Lilongwe and surrounding areas.

The soldier has been identified as Noel Kabango (35), working at the Support Battalion.

He and alleged gang members have been arrested following a robbery at a shopping centre at Nkhoma Chipiku where over K3 million (more than R60 000) was stolen.

Other suspects have been named as Jafali Bashiri (20), Mixon Banda (36) and Lyton Magombo (25).

They have been linked to other robberies in the area.

Investigations are in progress and the suspects will be arraigned in court soon.

Malawi soldiers have previously appealed for an increase in their salaries, said to be meagre.

Soldiers from Malawi Defence Force serving on UN peace keeping mission in Democratic Republic of Congo earlier this year protested angrily against government’s decision to drastically cut their UN-sponsored allowances.
