Britain not bailing out Zim

HARARE, (CAJ News) – ZIMBABWE’S hopes of financial assistance from colonial master Britain have been dashed after the Embassy clarified speculation around an envoy’s visit.

Lord (Peter) Mandelson’s visit to Zimbabwe earlier this year where he met Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa had led to recent speculation financial package was imminent for the cash-strapped government.

The British Embassy in Harare rejected such reports.

It said Lord Mandelson was not attending in his capacity as senior adviser to an investment bank.

“There was no discussion of loans or transactions of any nature with Mr Chinamasa. The meeting focused on the economic reform agenda.”

The Embassy stated the UK was not “bailing out” the government of Zimbabwe.

“No UK taxpayer’s money has been or will be used to directly fund the government of Zimbabwe.”

It said any decision on future UK support would require demonstrable progress on human rights, governance and rule of law, in addition to economic reform.

Zimbabwe is in dire need of funds to pay salaries to civil servants.
