NAIROBI, (CAJ News) – KENYA has been urged to investigate the killing of a prominent human rights lawyer, his client and a driver.

The Willie Kimani, the client he was representing, Josephat Mwendwa, and his driver Joseph Muiruri have been found murdered after their disappearance on June 30.

They disappeared after a court appointment in Machakos County, east of Nairobi.

The court appointment concerned an incident from April 2015, in which Mwendwa was allegedly stopped for a driving offence and shot at by a senior police officer.

Mwendwa had appealed for help from Kimani, who was representing him.

Bärbel Kofler, Germany Commissioner for Human Rights Policy and Humanitarian Aid, urged Kenya’s government to investigate the circumstances of this act and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“Where police officers are among the suspects, the investigation should be handed over to independent bodies,” Kofler said.

He lauded the role played by professionals as Kimani in the protection of human rights.
