Junior swimmers making their mark

JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – THE swimming action and fast times have continued on the second day of competition at the South African Level 2 Regional Age Group Swimming Championships in Cape Town and Johannesburg.

At the Ellis Park Swimming Pool in Gauteng, Namibia’s Mikah Burger won the U11 200m freestyle in 2:26.29, the 100m breaststroke in 1:24.25 as well as the 100m butterfly in 1:09.75, while Tshwane’s 12 year old James Smith claimed the gold in the 200m freestyle in 2:26.86 and the 100m breaststroke in 1:25.33 and later bagged the silver in the 100m butterfly
in 1:19.20.

Also winning two golds on the night was Johannesburg’s Carl Krause, touching the wall in 2:18.45 in the 200m freestyle and 33.86 in the 50m backstroke.

On the ladies side, Joburg’s Dakota Tucker was fastest in the U11 100m breaststroke in 1:26.84 and the 50m backstroke in 34.57 and also claimed the silver in the 100m butterfly in 1:17.16.

Winning two gold medals was Gauteng’s Tatum Lomax (13), clocking 2:24.16 in the 200m freestyle and 1:14.46 in the 100m butterfly, while Pretoria’s Melissa Carney scooped the gold in the 16-18 age group category 200m freestyle race in 2:19.54 and grabbed two silver medals in the 100m breaststroke in 1:24.69 and the 50m backstroke in 34.54.

The UWC Swimming Pool in Cape Town saw plenty of action from PE’s Dennis de Villiers (11), who claimed four gold medals in the 200m freestyle in 2:21.09, the 100m breaststroke in 1:27.70, the 50m backstroke in 33.82 and the 100m butterfly in 1:13.66.

Ivan van Rooijen (13) was victorious in the 100m breaststroke in 1:19.16  and later on when on to claim the silver in the 200m freestyle in 2:19.46 and the bronze in the 50m backstroke in 34.32.

On the ladies side, the Eastern Cape continued to dominate as Lauren Gathercole (14) won the 50m backstroke in 34.40 and also claimed the bronze in the 200m freestyle in 2:23.82, while Meagan Horton (12) won her 200m freestyle race in 2:25.46 and then followed that with the silver in the 50m backstroke in 35.83.

East London’s Sara Russell (15) shined in the 50m backstroke, winning the event in 34.26 and later won the silver in the 200m freestyle in 2:12.12, while Cape Town’s Georgia Nel (13) took the top spot in the 200m freestyle
in 2:20.80 and also came second in the 50m backstroke in 34.47.

The SA Level 2 Regional Age Group Championships in Cape Town and Johannesburg continue.
