ABUJA, (CAJ News) – NEW measures have been launched to promote safe internet use among Nigerian users.

Google has announced the initiatives to coincide with just-concluded Safer Internet Day.

In partnership with the National Film and Videos Censors Board and Home Vida, the company organised an interactive programme for Nigerian students.

Themed “Play Your Part for a Better Internet”, it has been held at Queens College in Lagos.

It included a training session and movie screening for 250 students and the presentation of a paper on Safety Online.

The internet giant also used the occasion to announce the launch of web rangers programme in Nigeria.

The programme, which currently runs in ten countries, provides workshops which aims to train young people to become “Online Safety Ambassadors.”

These would help raise awareness of online safety with their peers and in their schools.

Google will be working with the Nigerian Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and HomeVida, to train over 10 000 Nigerian students via the Web Rangers.

Google also announced the launch of its security checkup tool which gives account owners a quick way to control their security settings, manage recovery phone numbers and control what devices are connected to their accounts.

Google’s Policy and Government Relations Manager, Titi Akinsanmi, stressed on the safety of users online.

“We all use the internet, so it is important for government, the organised private sector and civil societies to collaborate to develop and promote strong policies aimed at improving the safety of users,” Akinsanmi said.

The official said as the online safety landscape continued to evolve, key stakeholders needed to employ smarter tools that would ensure the online environment remained safe for everyone.

Safe Internet Day is marked yearly on February 9.
