from PHYLLIS BIRORI in Kigali, Rwanda
KIGALI, (CAJ News) – DEMOCRATIC Republic of Congo (DRC) thrashed Mali 3-0 to win the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) in an thrilling final played at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Sunday.
A brace by Meshack Elia and another gem of a goal by Jonathan Bolingi were enough to see DRC win their second CHAN championship title.
DRC wrestled the title from the then defending champions Libya, who failed to qualify in the preliminary knock-out stages of the qualifying campaign.
The central African nation, who assembled a very powerful side meant business from the onset as they opened their score-sheet in the 29th minute through Elia.
Elia got an inviting cross from the centre half before passing Abdul Karim Dante to rifle home from close range, beating all systems out for Djigui Diarra in goal for Mali.
Following the goal, DRC continued bombarding Mali from left, right and centre with Elia being the menace at the Malian defence while Bolingi completed the route.
However, the West Africans had their own scoring opportunities but Abdoulaye Diarra failed to score for Mali from close range following a rebound from a thunderbolt by fellow teammate Moussa Sissoko.
