Germany offers support to terror-prone West Africa
LAGOS, (CAJ News) – GERMAN Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has expressed his country’s solidarity with West Africa in the wake of deadly terror attacks extremist groups have been carrying out.
The latest such onslaught occurred in Burkina Faso this past weekend when scores of civilians were killed in the country’s capital city.
“I strongly condemn the brutal attacks in Ouagadougou. Our sympathy goes out to the many victims and their families and friends,” said Steinmeier.
He said the attacks showed the magnitude of the threat to security and stability in the entire region.
“We must prevent the cancer of terrorism from spreading further in the Sahel and West Africa. We cannot leave the countries of the region to face this challenge alone.”
Steinmeier said Germany, along with its partners, was providing a high level of support in this field in a wide range of ways, including its role in the United Nations mission in Mali, and was willing to provide even greater support in the future.
Burkina Faso is among a number of countries in the region to suffer attacks by extremist groups in recent years.
Nigeria, where the Boko Haram is perpetrating terror attacks, has borne the biggest brunt with over 20 000 people killed and over 2 million displaced.
