US concerned at escalating tensions in Nigeria
LAGOS, (CAJ News) – THE United States has expressed concern at violent clashes between members of the Nigerian Army and the Shiite group Islamic Movement in Zaria, Kaduna State,north-western Nigeria
The violence has escalated over the past several days.
The US Diplomatic Mission to the West African country said while many details of the incidents that reportedly began on December 12 remained unclear, it was dismayed to learn of multiple civilian deaths.
“It is essential that all sides refrain from actions that further destabilize the situation,” read a statement from the US Mission.
The Mission said the United States called on the Government of Nigeria to quickly, credibly, and transparently investigate these events in Zaria and hold to account any individuals found to have committed crimes.
The Nigerian Army confirmed it arrested the leader of the Shiite group, Ibrahim El-Zazaky, and his wife during a raid at his house in Zaria this past weekend.
The army alleged members of the sect tried to kill the chief of army staff, Tukur Buratai.
While the death toll has not been confirmed, Shiite members believe some hundreds have been killed.
