Mobile operator wary of festive scams
JOHANNESBURG, (CAJ News) – MTN South Africa has alerted customers to scams that have been on the increase coinciding with the festive season.
Ike Dube, General Manager of Business Risk Management at MTN SA, said the company wanted to ensure its customers were reminded about the necessary steps they needed to take should unfortunate incidents occur.
“Therefore advising customers to be careful in this regard, as we have noticed a pattern in the past in theft and fraud,” he said.
Dube asked customers to be extra vigilant when shopping.
The official said if a mobile device got stolen, it was not only the device that is compromised, but also the information stored on it.
“If a device is lost or stolen, the user must immediately report it to the police and contact MTN straight away, to allow us to deactivate the SIM – this will ensure that the SIM cannot be fraudulently used where you as a customer is left with a massive bill to settle months later, in light of the fact that the SIM was still being used.”
